The memorial stands on the Lexington Green, the small common where Captain John Parker's militia company gathered before dawn on April 19, 1775. Shots fired there that morning are often cited as the opening clash of the Revolutionary War, and the monument commemorates the men who held their line. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 5 by 7 inch glass negative sometime between 1900 and 1915, when the town was building up its public memory of the battle. The firm was known for photographing American towns and landmarks, and this view shows the open, tree-lined square as it looked in those years.
