Lexington's Battle Monument stands on the green where militiamen gathered on the morning of April 19, 1775, and where the first shots of the Revolutionary War were fired. The granite obelisk, erected in 1799, honors the colonists who fell there, and their remains were later placed beneath it. This view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced photographs of American landmarks for sale to travelers around 1900. Its glass negative shows how the town was presenting its Revolutionary past to visitors at the turn of the century, when such monuments were becoming popular destinations.
