Lexington Green, on the morning of April 19, 1775, is the setting for this engraving, which shows the militia line breaking under fire, with smoke drifting over the common and a soldier lying fallen in the foreground. The skirmish there was among the first clashes of the American Revolution, when a company of local militia faced British regulars marching toward Concord. Engravings like this one were often produced within a few years of the event, and they helped shape how readers at home understood the fighting, sometimes presenting the scene more heroically than the confused reality of the morning.
