Unlike most Civil War prints, which show a single battle, this large engraving covers the sweep of a campaign: Union forces under William T. Sherman moving across Georgia from Atlanta to Savannah in late 1864. The army covered roughly 300 miles, living off the countryside and destroying railroads, and the march became one of the war's most discussed episodes. The print was made after a design by F.O.C. Darley, a prominent American illustrator, and its copyright was registered to L. Stebbins in 1868. The title was supplied by Library staff rather than the artist, and the date and attributions come from an older shelflist card that has not been fully verified.
