Because the record gives little beyond its title, this view is best understood through the day it belongs to: July 3, 1863, the last day of the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. That afternoon, Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee assaulted the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, in a charge that ended in heavy losses and marked the turning point of the campaign. Photographers who returned to the field in the following months documented the ridges, fences and farmland, which helps show how the ground looked in the aftermath.
