This sheet prints the original lyrics to "Dixie," the song that Daniel Decatur Emmett, a Northern minstrel performer, wrote in 1859 for a blackface minstrel show. Its wording reflects the minstrel stage it came from, and its cheerful nostalgia for the South is worth reading closely alongside what the song later came to represent. During the Civil War the tune spread widely among Confederate soldiers and civilians, who adopted it as an unofficial anthem of the Confederacy. Its place on a Gettysburg and Confederate board reflects that wartime role.
