Issued under the name of L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm that did much to popularize color lithographs in America, this picture was copyrighted in May 1887, about twenty-four years after the fighting. It depicts the third day of the battle, July 3, 1863, when Robert E. Lee sent roughly 12,500 Confederate troops across open fields toward the Union center on Cemetery Ridge, an assault later known as Pickett's Charge. Popular prints like this one helped shape how Americans remembered the war, often turning a bloody afternoon into a settled image of courage and sacrifice. The publisher credit comes from a shelflist card and has not been independently verified.
