The French caption, *Président des Etats-Unis*, sets this engraved likeness apart from the other Lincoln portraits on the board and suggests it was aimed at a French-speaking readership. Lincoln led the United States from 1861 until his assassination in 1865, and during the Civil War European newspapers and illustrated magazines eagerly printed his portrait. Engravers of that era turned photographs or paintings into lines cut by hand, so the tone and shading of a face like this one depend on the skill of the engraver.
