Romare Bearden's *The Family* stands out among domestic scenes of its era for its focus on a household whose everyday life centers on food and drink. Made in 1976 as a color etching with aquatint, the print reflects the artist's long interest in the daily routines of Black families, a theme that runs through his collages and paintings. Bearden, born in 1911 and raised partly in Harlem, drew on memory and neighborhood ritual to build scenes like this one. Its subject matter treats the shared table as a quiet center of family life.
