Andrew Johnson, the Tennessee-born president who took office after Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, appears here in a wood engraving that uses a household kettle as its central symbol. The cartoon ran in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper in June 1866, at the height of the fight between Johnson and Congress over how the defeated Southern states would return to the Union. Its subject is Reconstruction, and the figure of Columbia, the national personification of the United States, is included among the subjects. Political cartoons of this period often used domestic objects like a kettle to make complicated constitutional disputes easy to read at a glance.
