Here the subject is a solo show of paintings by William Sommer (1867–1949), a Cleveland artist whose expressive, color-rich work drew on the Ohio landscape and everyday life. The poster announces that exhibition in Cleveland, and its date stamp of February 23, 1938, places it in the middle of the Great Depression. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, commissioned posters like this one to promote local exhibitions and to give artists paid work. Silkscreen printing, used here, was a low-cost method that let designers produce bold, flat shapes and strong color in multiple copies.
