A broad view of the Gettysburg battlefield from the Union side places the viewer where the Army of the Potomac held its lines during the fighting of July 1 to 3, 1863. Those three days, under Gen. George G. Meade, ended Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North and are widely regarded as the turning point of the Civil War in the East. The town's ridges and fields were soon covered with monuments and a national cemetery, and Abraham Lincoln's address at its dedication in November 1863 gave the place lasting meaning. Images like this one show how the landscape looked before those memorials were set in place.
