Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, is the setting here, and the picture belongs to a broad group of general views of the town and battlefield that photographers produced in the decades after the battle of July 1863. Images of this kind show the landscape and buildings as visitors and veterans encountered them, often before the monuments and tourist infrastructure of later years filled the ground. Because the battle reshaped a small Pennsylvania county seat into a national memorial site, such views are valued today as records of how the town looked during that transition.
