Chestnut Farms Dairy was one of the best-known milk businesses in Washington, D.C., and this glass negative records it from the early twentieth century, roughly between 1910 and 1926. The National Photo Company, which photographed the city extensively during those years, made the image as part of a large commercial record of Washington life. Dairies of this period sold milk delivered by horse-drawn wagon, and pictures like this one document the working side of a capital city growing quickly. The glass plate also shows the wear typical of its age, with streaks and surface blemishes from deterioration of the original coating.
