Chestnut Farms Dairy was one of the best-known milk suppliers in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative captures the business during the years when the city's dairies were delivering bottled milk door to door. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital from roughly 1910 to 1926, made the image, and its catalog of street scenes and storefronts offers a useful record of everyday commerce. Because the title comes from the company's own notes rather than a verified source, the exact location and date remain approximate, but the glass plate itself preserves the look of a working city dairy from that period.
