Chestnut Farms Dairy is one of the few commercial subjects in the National Photo Company Collection that names a specific Washington business rather than a street or monument. The company, founded in the Washington area, documented the city's streets, buildings and businesses in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative likely dates from the period between 1910 and 1926 when that work was at its height. Dairies of this era were a familiar part of city life, delivering milk and other products from nearby farms to urban households before refrigerated trucks and pasteurization rules reshaped the trade. The negative's surface shows streaks and blemishes from the natural decay of its original coating, which is worth noticing when comparing it with later prints.
