Chestnut Farms Dairy was one of the best-known milk suppliers in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative captures a business that stood at the center of daily life in a growing capital. The National Photo Company, which documented the city extensively between 1910 and 1926, made the image, and its title comes from the company's own notes rather than from a verified record. Look closely at the surface of the plate: the streaks and blemishes come from the deterioration of its original coating, a common trait of glass negatives that have aged for a century.
