This steel engraving looks across the East River from the heights of Brooklyn toward the dense skyline of lower Manhattan. It was made after a drawing by A.C. Warren and engraved by G.R. Hall for *Picturesque America*, a two-volume survey of American scenery edited by William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton & Company around 1872. Such steel engravings were prized for their fine detail, and the book aimed to present the country's cities and landscapes to a middle-class readership. Brooklyn was then a separate city, not yet joined to New York until 1898, which gives the view added interest.
