Roosevelt is shown in half-length profile, turned to the right, in a portrait that dates to about 1933, the year he took office as the 32nd president. That was the first year of the New Deal, when the country was deep in the Great Depression and banks were closing across the nation. Portraits from this period were widely circulated in newspapers and government materials, so a sitter's face became a familiar symbol of reassurance during a time of national anxiety. The print is held by the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress, which keeps a large body of images documenting American public life.
