Here a stage performer, Jennie Yeamans, is the named subject, with a dog placed beside her in this c1887 print. Yeamans was a popular American comic actress and singer who built her reputation on the musical and comic stage in the 1880s, when theatrical portraits like this one were widely sold to fans and used to promote productions. The imprint credits the Forbes Company, a Boston firm with branches in New York that was known for lithographic work, including theatrical advertising. Such prints show how performers were packaged for the public in the decades before film, and the dog in the scene is worth a closer look as a sign of the sentimental appeal the act was built on.
