Advertised as the pacemakers at popular prices, this poster promotes Ferris' Comedians, a touring comedy company whose claim was to set the standard for low-cost theater admission. Its imprint lists Cincinnati and New York, and the U.S. Printing Company dates it to about 1900. In that period, cheap tickets brought working-class audiences to traveling variety and comedy troupes, and such companies often featured animal acts alongside human performers. Posters like this one were meant to be read quickly from a street wall, so their bold lettering and eye-catching illustration were central to filling seats.
