Eugen Sandow, the Prussian-born strongman who toured America in the early 1890s and was billed as "the Modern Samson," is the name that anchors this lithograph, which advertised a vaudeville bill built around his act. Cincinnati's Strobridge Lithographing Company was one of the busiest American printers of theatrical posters in that era, and its bright, crowded layouts were designed to catch the eye of passersby on busy streets. Vaudeville in the 1890s mixed acrobats, comedians, singers, and novelty acts on a single program, and strongmen like Sandow drew large crowds. Its place on a dog-themed board reflects the gallery's grouping rather than the poster's own subject, so it is best read as a window onto popular entertainment of the period.
