A cigar label built around a pointer dog, a shotgun and a hunting bag makes its purpose plain: the brand was selling a sporting ideal along with the tobacco. Labels like this were printed in large runs and pasted onto cigar boxes, so the lithographed image was meant to catch the eye of a buyer scanning a tobacconist's shelf. The pointer, shown holding a stiff, watchful pose over game birds, was a favorite subject for makers appealing to men who hunted or wished they did. Look closely at the dog's posture and the careful rendering of feathers and fur, which show how much effort went into making a small paper label read as an outdoor scene.
