Painted on the lid of a cigar box label, the St. Bernard here is the working breed in its most recognizable form: heavy-coated, broad-headed, and posed as the loyal companion the name Rover suggested to tobacco buyers of the period. Advertising of this kind, printed in bright chromolithography, leaned on dogs to suggest reliability and good humor, and the breed's association with mountain rescue in the Swiss Alps made it an especially appealing emblem. Labels like this were often kept as collectibles long after the cigars were gone, which is why so many survive today.
