Old Dog Tray is the name printed across this cigar label, and the reclining dog resting in the sunset glow is the detail that sets it apart from the many dog pictures on this board. Stephen Foster's 1853 song "Old Dog Tray" was a popular parlor tune in the nineteenth century, and tobacco makers often borrowed well-known songs and sentimental figures to make their wrappers and labels memorable to buyers. Labels like this one were pasted onto cigar boxes, so the image was meant to catch the eye on a crowded shop shelf.
