Our Pointer is a portrait of a single dog, and the title is the only detail the record gives us, so the picture's story has to be read from the image itself. Pointers were bred to hold a steady stance when they caught the scent of game birds, and a studio or household portrait of one often signals a dog valued as a working companion as much as a pet. Photographs of individual dogs like this became common as cameras grew cheaper and more families kept animals they were fond of. Look at the posture and the gaze, which can reveal how much the owner wanted the dog to appear alert and capable.
