Thomas Alva Edison is pictured here in a portrait the Library of Congress dates to about 1915, when he was in his late sixties and already one of the most famous inventors in the country. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office under Edison's own name, a sign of how carefully he managed his public image and the rights to his likeness. Its caption card links it to the subject of inventions, a fitting label for a man whose phonograph, motion picture work and electric lighting had reshaped daily life. The record notes that its details come from an older caption card and have not been verified, so the exact occasion for the sitting is best treated as unknown.
