Dated to about March 6, 1911, this portrait shows Thomas Edison in his mid-60s, when he was running his large research complex in West Orange, New Jersey. The record flags its date as unverified, since it comes from an old caption card, and it notes a copyright-office deposit, which suggests the image was registered for publication. By then Edison was known as much for organized, team-based invention as for individual breakthroughs like the phonograph and the carbon-filament lamp. He was then working on new projects, including an alkaline storage battery, and the portrait reflects how his public image had become that of a tireless American inventor.
