Thomas Edison is the subject here, shown in a cyanotype, a blueprint-style process that produces the distinctive deep blue tone seen in this print. The record dates it to around November 25, 1892, though it notes that the date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. The photograph was copyrighted by W.K. Dickson, who worked closely with Edison's laboratory on early motion picture experiments, and it was made in Orange, New Jersey, where Edison's West Orange laboratory was located. Its caption card links it to the subject of inventions, a fitting label for a man whose work spanned the phonograph and the incandescent lamp.
