Thomas Alva Edison, shown here in a portrait dated around August 1921, was a figure whose name became shorthand for the American inventor. The photograph was taken by Lueder, and the record notes that Edison himself held the copyright, a detail that reflects how carefully he managed his public image. By the early 1920s Edison had already built a reputation on the phonograph, the incandescent lamp, and his laboratory work in New Jersey, and portraits like this one helped spread that reputation far beyond his workshops.
