Thomas Alva Edison is the sitter here, pictured in a studio portrait from about 1904 made by the Byron firm in New York City. The photographer's name and the Copyright Office notation on the record suggest the image was registered for publication, which was a common route for portraits of well-known figures to reach newspapers, magazines and the public. By that point Edison had already secured his reputation with the phonograph, the practical incandescent lamp and the motion picture camera, so a portrait of him carried real weight as a public image of American invention. The record is drawn from an old caption card, so the exact date is worth treating with some caution.
