Thomas Alva Edison is the sitter here, photographed around 1906 by the Byron studio in New York City, whose portraits of prominent Americans of the period were widely reproduced. Edison was by then one of the best-known inventors in the country, credited with the phonograph, a practical incandescent lamp, and a large body of patents filed through his laboratories in New Jersey. The Library of Congress catalog notes that its date and caption details come from an older card and have not been independently verified, so the exact sitting date should be treated with some caution. The image is worth studying as a record of how inventors were presented to the public in the early twentieth century, when a carefully composed portrait could help shape a celebrity's public reputation.
