Thomas Alva Edison is the subject here, shown in a portrait made around 1928, a few years before his death in 1931. By then he was one of the most famous inventors in the world, known for the phonograph, the practical incandescent lamp, and the motion picture camera and kinetoscope, and he had built a research laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey. The caption card's tracing "Radio" points to his continuing interest in broadcasting and electrical communication late in his career. Edison's company registered the photograph with the U.S. Copyright Office, which is why it carries a copyright notice in the record.
