Lawrence, Kansas, was a free-state town founded in 1854 by New England emigrant aid settlers, and in 1869 it was still recovering from the August 1863 raid by William Quantrill's men, which burned much of its business district. The University of Kansas had opened in 1866 on the hill above town, and the railroad that reached Lawrence in 1865 linked its grain, lumber, and livestock trade to eastern markets. Mills and shops along the Kansas River gave the town its working character, while Massachusetts Street served as its commercial spine. Residents who had lived through the border conflict knew Lawrence as a symbol of antislavery resolve, and they were now rebuilding brick storefronts and a civic life centered on churches, schools, and the new college.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Lawrence, Kansas, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
