Topeka, Kansas, in 1869 was a river town of about 5,000 people that had been the state capital since Kansas entered the Union in 1861. Its growth rested on the Kansas River and on the Kansas Pacific Railway, which had reached the town in 1866 and tied local grain, livestock, and lumber to markets in the East. Residents were still arguing over the shape of their government, and the unfinished stone statehouse on the hill was a constant reminder that the capital had not yet settled into permanence. Many of the wood-frame houses and commercial blocks drawn on this sheet were newer than the people living in them, which suggests how quickly a frontier outpost was turning into a county seat.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Topeka, Kansas, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
