Atchison, Kansas, in 1869 was a Missouri River town that had grown quickly on the strength of river trade and the steamboats that tied it to St. Louis and points downriver. Founded in 1854 and named for David Rice Atchison, a former U.S. senator from Missouri, it was among the first places in the territory to attract settlers and capital. Its economy rested on the river landing, warehouses, and the flour and grain shipments that moved through it, and rail connections were pushing westward to reshape that trade. Ruger's bird's-eye view from that year shows a town laid out on a bluff above the water, with the streets and buildings that its merchants and boosters wanted outsiders to see.
