Balaklava's cattle pier was where livestock came ashore to feed the British army during the Crimean War, and this view shows the harbour as a working supply port rather than a battlefield. Roger Fenton made the photograph in 1855, when the port had become the main British base after the Allied landings on the Crimean coast the previous year. Printed on salted paper, the image records the ships, quays and stacked stores that kept the army supplied through the winter of 1854 to 1855. Fenton's Crimean work was among the earliest sustained photographic coverage of a war, and his views of logistics as much as of soldiers show how much depended on the harbour.
