Trossel's barnyard at Gettysburg is the setting, and the subject is the dead animals that lay around the farm after the fighting of July 1863. The stereograph came from the War Photograph & Exhibition Company of Hartford, Connecticut, which sold Civil War scenes as illustrated war history. The negative dates to between 1863 and 1865, but this card was printed later, in the 1890s, when the battlefield had become a site of memory and commemoration. Views like this one document the war's cost in a way that monuments and battle maps do not.
