Trossel's barnyard, better known as the Trostle farm, lay south of Gettysburg near the fighting of July 2, 1863, and the carcasses of horses and cattle lie among its outbuildings in this view. The picture is a reminder that the battle's destruction reached well beyond the soldiers. Stereographs like this were meant to be looked at in pairs through a stereoscope, which let parlor audiences far from Pennsylvania examine a battlefield in three dimensions. The card was printed well after the battle, and its date is recorded only as a range.
