A color woodcut poster advertising the Cirque d'Hiver, the winter circus in Paris, promises performances every evening at 8 o'clock, and its subjects include an aerialist and a balloon. The Cirque d'Hiver, opened in 1852 on the Rue Amelot, was a major venue for equestrian and acrobatic shows, and the printing house Morris père et fils was known for the bold, graphic posters that brought such entertainments to city streets. The poster's pairing of aerial acts with ballooning reflects the late nineteenth-century fascination with flight, a theme also linked to the Tissandier collection in which the item is held.
