This poster shows a giant figure, or gayant, rising into the air alongside a balloon named Le Jupiter, part of festivities advertised for 14 July 1868 in Douai, northern France. Carried giant figures were a long-standing tradition in towns of the region, and pairing one with a balloon ascent made a playful draw for a fête. The hand-colored lithograph and printed text reflect the caricature and spectacle typical of 1860s posters, when public balloon ascents were a popular marvel.
