This 1940 silkscreen poster, produced under the Federal Art Project, takes on a specific rural problem in Illinois: flies breeding in open privies and carrying disease to food and people. Its title, "Outwitted by community sanitation," presents proper planning as the way to beat the insects rather than simply swatting at them. During the 1930s, many small communities still relied on outdoor privies, and public health agencies knew that flies moving between waste and kitchens could spread typhoid and dysentery. The Works Progress Administration's poster division used bold color and simple graphic design to carry such health messages to people who might never read a pamphlet.
