Few maps shaped an American capital as directly as this one. Its radiating avenues, cut diagonally across a regular street grid and named for the states, meet at the Capitol and the President's House. Pierre Charles L'Enfant, a French-born military engineer, drew the basic design in 1791 at George Washington's request, but his dispute with the commissioners overseeing the project led to his dismissal in early 1792. The engraved version that circulated afterward was completed by Andrew Ellicott, and it became the reference for how the city was laid out.
