The High Bridge spanning the Harlem River was the first major bridge to carry Croton Aqueduct water into New York City, and this hand-colored lithograph shows it as a point of civic pride in the late 1840s. Built in the 1840s to bring fresh water south from the Croton Reservoir, the stone arches rose high above the river and the surrounding woods, making the bridge a popular destination for visitors from the city. Nathaniel Currier's firm produced many such views of American landmarks for a mass market, and this one was issued around 1849, when the aqueduct system was a source of local boosterism. Its bright coloring and idealized scenery reflect the period's taste for picturesque engineering.
