Spanning the East River between the Lower East Side and Brooklyn, the Williamsburg Bridge opened in 1903 and was for a time the longest suspension bridge in the world. Its main span runs about 1,600 feet, and its steel towers and cables became a familiar sight to generations of commuters and dock workers. This print comes from the Wittemann Collection at the Library of Congress, catalogued as number 383 and dated only to the years between 1920 and 1950, a period when the bridge carried heavy streetcar, subway and vehicle traffic across the river.
