Where the road bends past the granite spires and dark pines, the valley floor opens into a view that many early visitors came to Yosemite to find. The two-lane road is the detail that sets this scene apart from the valley's better-known waterfalls and domes: it shows how motor travel reshaped access to the park in the early twentieth century, when narrow roads replaced wagon tracks and stagecoach routes. Yosemite was set aside as a state grant in 1864 and made a national park in 1890, and the roads that followed brought in growing numbers of tourists. Look at how the pavement is set against the massive rock walls to see how small human routes looked beside the cliffs.
