This view of Lower Peachtree Street shows the stretch of Atlanta's best-known thoroughfare that served as its commercial core in the early 1900s, with streetcar tracks running down the middle of the roadway. It was issued as an illustration in a souvenir book about Atlanta, published by the Lester Book and Stationery Co. from its Peachtree Street address and printed by the Albertype Co. of Brooklyn, New York. Albertype was known for reproducing photographs in photomechanical form, and photogravure gives the image its soft tonal range and fine detail in buildings and street life. The print is a useful record of how a growing Southern city presented itself to visitors in the years around 1900.
