This engraving records Savannah as it stood on March 29, 1734, less than a year after James Oglethorpe brought the first colonists up the Savannah River in 1733. The drawing was made by Peter Gordon, a surveyor in the colony, and engraved in London by Pierre Fourdrinier, who published it around 1735 for readers curious about the new settlement in Georgia. The bird's-eye vantage shows the planned town of streets and open squares laid out at the start, a grid that still shapes the city's historic center.
