Forsyth Park in Savannah is anchored by a cast-iron fountain whose white spray and tiered basin have made it one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. The park was laid out in the 1840s on the southern edge of the old town, and the fountain, installed in the late 19th century, became a centerpiece for the squares and promenades that define Savannah's planned layout. Its design, with a central jet rising above a wide basin, drew on European garden fountains of the era. Look closely at the ironwork and the surrounding oaks to see how the scene has changed over more than a century of public use.
