Lincoln, Illinois, in 1869 was a young railroad town in Logan County, barely fifteen years old, and its growth followed the Illinois Central Railroad, which had laid its line through the prairie in the early 1850s. Grain, livestock, and farm goods moved out by rail, and the county seat drew lawyers, merchants, and farmers to its courthouse square. Residents knew the town as the place Abraham Lincoln had often visited while riding the Eighth Judicial Circuit, a connection that gave the town its name and a steady sense of local pride. The years after the Civil War brought new churches, schools, and a college to the community, and the streets shown on this map reflect a town still filling in its blocks between the depot and the courthouse.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Lincoln, Illinois, drawn in 1869. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
